New Federal Guidance on Classroom Technology: Why Adams Traditional Academy Has Taught This Way All Along

The Department of Education says classroom technology must earn its place. Ours always has.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Education released new guidance on the responsible use of technology in classrooms, and for families at Adams Traditional Academy, it reads like a description of what already happens here every day.

What the new guidance says

The Department's letter, released August 20, 2026, urges schools to focus on instructional value rather than recreational engagement when deciding how technology is used. The Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education put it plainly: cell phones and algorithm-driven social media distract students from learning and undermine the focused classroom environments students need to succeed, and schools are right to remove those distractions.

The guidance goes further. It says classroom technology should have a clear instructional purpose, be backed by real evidence, and be transparent with parents about how and when it is used. And when a tool is not improving learning, schools should be willing to remove it.

In short: technology in schools should have to earn its place.
