A recent video from Sophie Winkleman with the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship has started a bigger conversation about technology in schools. Her message is direct: children need more real instruction, more focus, more handwriting, more reading, and more human connection, not just more screens.

Why Screen-Free Classrooms Matter at Adams Traditional Academy

At Adams Traditional Academy, this is already part of who we are.

We believe technology can be useful, but it should never replace strong teaching, thoughtful discussion, books, paper, pencils, and face-to-face learning. Students do not need a screen in front of them all day to think deeply, solve problems, or build strong academic habits. In fact, many families are now looking for schools that give children a break from constant devices and bring learning back to the basics.

That is why ATA focuses on teacher-led instruction, a traditional curriculum, clear expectations, and a classroom environment where students can focus. Our approach gives students the space to listen, read, write, ask questions, and practice skills without the constant pull of digital distractions.

This conversation matters because parents are asking good questions. How much screen time is too much? Are devices helping students learn, or are they getting in the way? What kind of classroom gives children the best chance to grow?

For families in North Phoenix, Deer Valley, Norterra, and the surrounding communities, ATA offers a different kind of learning environment. We are a tuition-free K–8 charter school built around strong academics, citizenship, structure, and teacher-led learning.

The goal is not to reject technology completely. The goal is to use it with purpose, while protecting the parts of childhood and learning that matter most.

Children still need books. They still need handwriting. They still need teachers who know them. They still need time to think without a screen doing the thinking for them.

And honestly, that should not feel old-fashioned. It should feel necessary.
